Letter from the editor

For this week's newsletter, I offer a batch of ideas to mix up your poetry, to give rise to a variety of approaches slideways from the typical. Perhaps you've been playing around with an idea but it hasn't quite come together. Or maybe you heard a phrase that got your creative juices simmering but it hasn't quite come to a boil. As writers, we have in our pantry a plethora of words and phrases just waiting to be stirred together to create something new --sometimes, we simply need to try a new recipe!

For example think of a poem as a recipe. What do we need, what ingredients added to which and then shaken or stirred?

Sometimes, instead of writing from your perspective, consider the same idea but from a different platform. Consider a parent, a spouse, your child, your pet, your enemy, your best friend, a neighbor, teacher or the garage mechanic! Consider how the thoughts might change - or - stay the same.

When one is in debate club, you don't get to choose the side of an argument that you will defend. Often, you must convincingly defend the side you oppose! This can provide for some interesting poetry. Especially when you are speaking for an idea you might not espouse!

Research something you know nothing about and write a poem as if you literally have experienced whatever it is. Don't tell anyone that, of course and see what happens!

Write from a child's perspective or a senior's.

Take me on a trip to somewhere you've never been and make the reader believe you know it intimately!

All of these are fun exercises in shaking things up and trying something new! You may well surprise yourself!
