The purpose of this newsletter is to highlight some of the current contests and activities on the site, help educate members on how to host contests and activities, and provide clues to submit quality entries to contests. Write to me if you'd like something in particular covered.

What IF...
What IF..you think up this really cool contest where members write odes to walrus whiskers. You make a forum and offer some gift points as prizes and you wait. And wait. Oh no, the deadline is coming and no one has entered! What to do?
First things first, you'll have to wait until your deadline to see if there are any last minute whisker entries. Next, you'll have to post the contest is closed. Is this the first post in the forum? I hope not! Because you need a post in the forum before the item shows in public listings.
Next, did you promote your walrus whisker contest in the "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" listing? You're allowed an E-rated post in the listing if you have a E-rated intro, even if the item is GC or XGC. And you're allowed to promote three items! If your item is 13+ rating or lower, you can promote it in the "Writing.Com General Discussion" . If you're a preferred author, visit your "Preferred Authors' Forum" and drop a line there. (Hey, yellow cases...there's DUST in that forum.)
You can also drop a link in your notebook! Regular visitors to your portfolio might catch the link and visit. Another important place is the Newsfeed. Drop a link in there and you'll be sure to have a few people wander in and take a look at your contest. You might even find fellow walrus whisker enthusiasts!
If you have an upgraded account, you can create a promotional button image and have it clickable to the contest. Then use it as a signature in your emails and forum posts to help get the word out. If you have a basic account, no worries, place a link at the bottom of your emails for fellow members to follow to your forum.
Hopefully, with all that in place, you can open a second round to your contest with better success. As always, Write On!

Excerpt: This month is a little different: There's a post-apocalyptic game that is (currently) scheduled to come out late this year by the name of Phoenix Point, by the creator of the original classic X-Com (in which I have wasted many, many hours watching my beloved soldiers die after a failed shot, a mind-controlled teammate, and mass panic exposed by team of hardened soldier to total destruction). The back-stories written for this game have been truly weird and wonderful science fiction, and a contest had been opened to allow more. My entry, alas, was not chosen, but I'd like to see yours!

Ah well, you see that's because, to give some direction, I'll be giving a song title as a prompt. NB I'll indicate who sang the song as well but it's the actual song title that's the prompt.
So just to clarify, what do I have to do?:
Right, so if you didn't get it, all you have to do is write a small piece i.e. a short story of between 80 and 100 words using the song title as a prompt. Couldn't be easier could it. So off you go and get writing. Good luck and have fun.

QPdoll  wrote: First of all, thank you for including my contest, The No Dialogue Contest in your listing. It is most appreciated. Second, I always thank the contestants for entering the contest because I truly appreciate the time they took to write something and enter it. It's not easy to write with no dialogue. Personally, I depend on dialogue to help move the story along. It is a challenge. Also, just to get the word out, we're looking for STORIES, not vignettes or memos or memoirs.
