Dear Reader,
My Mom died of a sudden cardiac arrest, in Dec. 2006. My aunt (her sister) came over to stay with Dad and me for a couple of weeks, and helped us through the practical and emotional aspects of dealing with bereavement.
One of the things she did was to call a priest, to advise us on what we had to do to help Mom's soul on its journey. Among other things, the priest advised us to feed dogs. We were going to pray for her soul at a temple a few days after that conversation, and he said there would be dogs around for us to feed. Alternatively, we could arrange to pay the priests there, to buy food for the dogs.
That being the plan, we didn't go around the neighbourhood seeking stray dogs or anything.
However, the very next day (after the conversation), a mommy-dog came to our gate with her little pup. She instructed the pup to enter our driveway, and ran away herself. The pup crawled under Dad's car. Dad was going to be driving out that day, and wasn't used to looking under the car before he started up. I was worried about the pup's safety, and tried to 'shoo' him out. He sat there, grinning at me.
"Pup, you'll be hurt if Dad drives this car," I pleaded.
He finally obliged, emerging from under the car -- only to wriggle his little self under Dad's scooter. "PUP!" I said, getting a trifle impatient now. He peeped out, grinning at me.
Then -- it hit me. I was supposed to FEED this little guy. The priest had said so. I called out to my aunt and my Dad, and together, we poured some milk for him into a paper plate. He lapped it up.
He came every day, for about ten days, I think. He would sit at the gate till one of us gave him milk. He tried to come inside just once, but adopting a dog is a big commitment and Dad and I weren't willing to take on such a responsibility at that time. I tried to tell the pup to sleep outside, and gave him one of Mom's woolly caps as a bed, but he chewed it up, rejecting my offer.
One day, he accompanied me on my morning walk stopped at the park gate as I went into the park ... and didn't return the next day. I can still picture him, sitting there, looking thoughtful.
I did meet him once after that. He was foraging in a garbage can for food. I went to the store, bought a packet of milk and some paper plates, went quickly back to where I'd seen him -- he was still there -- and he happily lapped up the milk I offered. He didn't come back home, however, and that was the last I saw of him.
You could treat it as a mystery that a pup came along just when a pup was required. You could say it was coincidence. I think it was just meant to be, and that sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.
