Letter from the editor

“I obsess over the possibility of bad reviews and brood over them when they come. But they don't get me down for long; I just kill a few children and old ladies, and then I'm right as a trivet again...”
― Stephen King, Four Past Midnight

This month, I'd like to discuss the different options for what reviews you can receive here at Writing.com as well as the rewards available for reviewing other authors.

Rating/Reviewing Options (at the time of item creation):

*Pencil* Unrestricted Rating and Reviewing
This setting allows members to leave a star rating without providing a review or do both. This is the setting you see most often on Wdc because it is the default setting. Use this setting if you want basic feedback and don't mind if people just offer a star-rating with no explanation.

*Pencil* Rating Requires Review
This is my personal choice (usually) for new creations. This setting means the item will not accept ratings unless accompanied by review content. I personally don't get the same benefit from star reviews with no other feedback, so I feel this is the most useful for me. After a certain length of time allowing for some feedback, I change the item to unrestricted. While in the Rating Requires Review status, the rating average is only visible to the owner of the item. Once it's changed, it is visible to those according to the audience deemed when created (you set your preference (public, registered users, authors, etc.) at item creation).

*Pencil* Reviews Only; No Ratings
Sometimes when you're really close to a piece of work, a star rating can really affect you (though it shouldn't). This is a good option (in my opinion) that allows members to review your work and share their thoughts without a numerical star rating attached. This option can be especially useful during the early draft stages of your writing. Feedback is very important at that stage and removing the emotional reaction a star rating can cause, allows you to focus solely on the feedback offered.

*Pencil* Email Comments
This preference allows you to display an item without asking for reviews or feedback. It does allow for the reader/member to send an email comment without any type of rating. These emails are not permanently stored as a review and do not count as a review for the reviewer. In addition, they cannot be sent anonymously. The reviewer also receives an email copy of the comments sent.

Reviewing Rewards:

*Badge* The Review Mixer
Each time you review an author you have never reviewed before, the review system will automatically send you 50 Gift Points. A random bonus is often applied at times up to seven times that amount. The mixer will NOT reward anonymous reviews.

*Badge* Daily Review Rewards
Writing.Com offers a free program to all members that will reward any review that is at least 250 characters in length. Daily Review Rewards as an incentive for members to review items. The system keeps track of how many qualifying reviews are done and after midnight, the gift points are sent directly to your account. The more items reviewed, the higher the review reward!

*Badge* Public Review Rewards
Did you know members can receive Gift Points for reviews posted on the Public Review Page? As a member, you have the ability to reward public reviews that you think deserve credit by sending Gift Points from the Public Review page. Likewise, as a reviewer, simply making your review public allows other members to recognize your effort and reward you for a job well done.

*Badge* Good Deeds Go Noticed! Contest
This is a monthly contest that offers every member the chance to win Cash (yes, CASH!) or Gift Points and an exclusive Merit Badge for their Public Reviews! You can see the full description and rules for this challenge linked below.

*Badge* Auto-Rewards
Authors are allowed to designate certain items that automatically give Gift Points to a reviewer for their quality reviews on certain Writing.Com items. Gift Points are instantly dispersed from the author's personal Gift Point balance to the reviewer. This is a great way to bring attention to an item and give your readers an incentive to leave you a thorough review instead of just a rating. There is a small fee for using this service which pays for the additional advertising space and the exposure provided for these items. All public listing areas can be resorted to "Best Reward First".

What is your motivation for reviewing? Let me know in the comments!

I received some wonderful feedback to my last newsletter [#9667] "Over 200 Per Day and I'm proud to share it with you.

From Beholden
I am astounded by the traffic figures for WDC - had no idea they so big. As still a newby, I feel as though I'm just another number getting buried under the masses!

The site population is huge. That's why it's important to get active and make a splash just like you're doing. :)

From mollyworks2 with "Invalid Item
Hello, WDC is a dream come true for me and I am grateful for the unique freedom that is only found here. This is the most amazing writer's platform on the globe and I couldn't imagine a day without logging into my Writing.Com. I am a newbie and would highly appreciate the recognition of the Writing.Com/WDC Community Newsletter. My confidence is kind of iffy, I don't receive much encouragement and support at home. It's hard. Please consider this work or any of other content from my Portfolio. It would be wonderful to see!

Thank you for your time :)
Sincerely, Saundra A. Fisher (Sandy/mollyworks2)

Hi there! I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying your time here. I love it and I wish you many years of enjoyment. This is my second home and I've meant many really close friends here.

From hbk16
These are some interesting advice for both authors and readers. Authors should dare by writing and doing constant endeavors in order to be in a constant improvement.Readers should show in a fine way mistakes made by the authors and in the same time should encourage and show importance to their work. Good newsletter indeed!

Thanks for writing in! *Heart*
