Writing can be a solitary or social activity and there are different options for finding other people and groups both online and in person.

Here we have a great big community for writers so it's easy to see how writing can be a social event compared to many years ago when it was a more solitary situation. Sure, most stories themselves are written alone except for some that involve collaborations, but the process doesn't always mean hiding away in a cabin pounding at the keyboard until drafts are finished... though I kinda like the idea of doing that. Still, there are many social opportunities when it comes to writing and that is increased during October and November with the approach of National Novel Writing Month.

While not everyone writes novels, one thing that helped me attempt to be a little more social (yeah, I'm not the best at that either) has been through online and in person groups based around NaNoWriMo. The couple of years in Wyoming the only groups I found were online cause we're not known for a high population and required greater travel to find others back then. However, both in Oregon and California I've been able to connect to other writers during NaNoWriMo. And during all of it, I've had people here on WDC and on sites as well with the online writing communities.

And it doesn't have to just end at NaNoWriMo. The group I know where I live now, I first heard about from NaNoWriMo but they also have a meetup page and actually have writing and reading sessions two times a week all year long whenever people are available. There are many different options and not strictly for novel writers either when it comes to both finding people online and in person when the center of the activity involves writing. Which brings me to some of the options for finding groups both online and in person.

There are probably a few others but those are the top three at the moment. One might also use social media in order to connect with other writers. Aside from the typical sites like groups and pages on facebook, many people now have accounts on twitter, instagram and maybe snapchat. They can be good sources of inspiration and methods of communication that can be used for both online and the occasional in person gathering.

There are many groups and ways to check out different writers here as well. Doesn't matter if you write novels, poetry, flash fiction, fantasy, just want to review or have an idea for a contest, there might be a group or small gathering spot here on WDC. Just have to look around and start connecting.

Do you have a writing group online or in person? How did you find the group?



Back in June I wrote a For Authors newsletter that discussed methods for backing up or saving writing. Here is a thoughtful recommendation sent in for those looking to find options to have a copy saved in a different location along with other comments about the topic:

You can email yourself your own stories. Emails have a lot more memory now.

High Five my friend. I have kept my novels posted here for years. Most are in WIP that are kept private unless someone is reviewing it for me. I find keeping my updates here mean I can access them from any computer/phone/tablet. I share my work on twitter so others know where they can read my work. I also use google docs for working on and then copy and paste into my WDc file.

Wow! Thanks for this excellent and insightful information. I like WDC for saving some content as well and do have one external drive. My lack is in not backing up often enough especially now as I read this. I realize I also have a lot of downloaded audio class materials that I need to back up. And I always wonder about my PC kindle books. mm.
