Letter from the editor

Are you new to Writing.Com, and having posted your first item, noticed you now have a 1 in parentheses after your name? That's your Community Recognition, and you received that 1 and the title of Registered Author when you posted that first item. Did you know there are other awards that may be due you?

Achievement Merit Badges are special merit badges that are earned through your participation and interaction with members and activities on site. Things such as filling out your BioBlock, posting in message forums, giving out merit badges, and reviewing and rewarding authors are just a few ways to earn these awards.

After all, you didn't join WDC to be a solo act.

BUT ... you must claim these achievement awards; they will not automatically appear in your Portfolio. Access your Achievements page by clicking on the following link and claim your awards:

Or, go to My Account -> My Merit Badges. From there choose the Achievements link at the top.

Achievement Awards are broken down into seven categories: Getting Started, Account Anniversaries, Review, Message Forums, Rewarding, Newsfeed, and Merit Badge.

*Bulletg* Getting Started: These MBs are awarded for simply joining WDC,creating your first item, filling out your Bio Block, and favoriting your first author and first item. This nets you five MBs for very little effort.

*BulletO* Account Anniversaries: These MBs are awarded on selected anniversaries of the date you joined WDC. You can earn up to eight badges including on your 1st Year, 3rd Year, 5th Year, and then every fifth year after through the 30th Year.

*BulletGr* Review: You can earn up to nine MBs for reviews given to your fellow members--your first, 100th, 500th, 1000th, 2500th, 5000th, 10,000th, 25,000th and 50,000th.

*Bulletv* Message Forums: These MBs are awarded at specific milestones of posting in message forums. You can earn up to nine badges for the following milestones: your first, 100th, 500th, 1000th, 2500th, 5000th, 10,000th, 25,000th and 50,000th.

*Bulletb* Rewarding: You earn these milestone badges by rewarding reviewers found on the Reviewing page. Use the Credit the Reviewer window to award gift points to reviewers you feel deserving. Milestones exist for the possibility of 14 MBs from your first credit to your 250,000th credit.

*Bulletr* Newsfeed: These MBs are awarded at specific milestones--first, 100th, 500th, 1000th, 2500th, 5000th, 10,000th, 25,000th and 50,000th--for both posting on the Newsfeed or posting comments on a Newsfeed post.

*Bullet* Merit Badge: You've heard "it's better to give than to receive." Here you get credit for giving Merit Badges to fellow members, a merit badge to each of nine specific milestones. Remember you can give one MB at no cost each month.

You must initially claim your Getting Started achievement awards. Subsequent MBs are awarded automatically as the said milestones are reached.

As with regular merit badges, you receive a virtual Achievement MB. You can also opt to purchase a physical version.

So, welcome to Writing.Com. Write and post your stories, review fellow authors, and achieve success.

For more information about Achievement merit badges, check out "Merit Badges and Achievements.

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From the mailbag:

From hbk16: On the one hand writing shouldn't be stopped because of a review that someone doesn't want. The more someone writes
the more he learns from his previous mistakes. On the other hand review remains a hard task. The most important things are that the reviewer should always not hurt the writer and should encourage him.

         Agreed!
