Letter from the editor

When you first join Writing.com, you are asked to label yourself as a casual or avid reader or writer, a published author or some kind of literary professional. I chose 'avid reader'. In my time on Writing.com I've written more than 350 poems, 33 short stories and a novel. But all of those combined don't come close to the more than 1,000 books I've read since joining.

I have always considered myself a voracious reader, but until joining Writing.com, I truly had no idea how much I read. In 2013, Fran 💜 💜 💜 created "CLOSED!The Monthly Reading Challenge. We were asked to set ourselves a reading goal for the month, prove what books we'd read by writing a short review on each, and we'd earn ourselves a merit badge for achieving our goals. This was the first time I became aware that I read an average of 10 books per month.

Writing.com is a site for those who like to write, obviously, but it's also a site for those who like to read. A number of members read and review works on this site without ever writing items for their own portfolio. Others maintain a balance of reading and writing, and the benefits that reading and reviewing can have on your own writing have been explored in many newsletters and articles on this site. But how can reading published novels benefit you as a member of this site, beyond any inherent benefits of the act of reading itself? There are a number of activities that will reward you for reading published novels.

Editor's Picks

FORUM
Angel Product Reviews  (ASR)
Learn all about doing product reviews for WDC and earn merit badges for your effort! Fun!
#1209679 by iKïyå§ama-House Targaryen

This activity rewards you for every product review you write, whether it is a published novel, a movie or a music album. You need the ASIN number from Amazon.com and then you can add your review. You can write as many product reviews as you like, because product reviews don't count towards your portfolio limit. *Bigsmile* You can find out more about product reviews at "Product Review and find out how to create one at "Create/Edit a Product Review. "Angel Product Reviews will reward you with a merit badge for your first ten product reviews, then another after 30 product reviews and another after 60 product reviews. If you're reading, watching movies or listening to albums, this is a great way to earn yourself some merit badges! This activity can be joined at any time.

FORUM
Published Books of WdC Authors Forum   (18+)
This forum is for reading and reviewing WdC-Authors’ Published Books.
#1858542 by Joy

If you read a published book by a WDC author, you can earn a merit badge and gift points for writing both a Writing.com product review AND a review on an external site such as Amazon or Goodreads. You earn 500 gift points for every external site you post a review to (minimum of one), so you can end up getting a merit badge and a tidy sum from a single review. This activity can be joined at any time.

CLOSED!The Monthly Reading Challenge  (13+)
Read and review a certain number of books within two months period and receive the prizes.
#1945699 by ~Minja~

~Minja~ now runs this activity, and the premise is much the same. In the first five days of the months, post a message in the forum stating your reading goal for the month. At the end of the month, do an update saying how many books you read, and proving you read them. That proof could be a Writing.com product review, an informal review in your forum post or any number of other ways. If you read less than three books that month, you'll earn 500 gift points for each book. If you read three or more books that month, you'll earn a merit badge. And if you earn a merit badge two months in a row, you get the exclusive Monthly Reading Challenge merit badge. Sign up during the first five days of each month.

If you want to earn yourself something really exciting, check out this annual reading challenge. Every year this challenge will commission an exclusive, limited merit badge that you can earn by reading published books (fiction, poetry, etc.) and writing Writing.com products reviews on them. You set yourself a goal for the year (check the rules) and if you achieve your goal, you earn the exclusive merit badge that is only available that year. If you really want to put some pressure on yourself, you can donate 250,000 gift points and then if you achieve your personal goal, Minja will send you a fancy 500,000 awardicon during Cyber Week. Sign up during December.

It's worth pointing out that if you write a Writing.com product review, it may be eligible for submission to multiple activities simultaneously. Maximise your rewards! *Bigsmile*
