Wrapping Up Those Poetry Gifts with the Wrapped Refrain




The gifts sit around me in organized stacks. Rolls of colorful paper, scissors, and tape sit near. Several hours later, I’ve got everything ready for the first family Christmas event of the season. While this isn’t my idea of holiday fun, when you pair it with some festive music and chocolate it becomes tolerable, lol.

Whether you’re planning to gift poetry for the holidays or not, exploring the two wrapped refrain variations would be a fun way to wrap up the year.



Wrapped Refrain


This form was created recently (within the last twenty-five years or so) by poet Jan Turner.



MUST HAVES


--Each stanza’s first four syllables are repeated at the end of the last line of that stanza. So if your first stanza starts with the words “I love snowmen” the end of the last line of that same stanza must be “I love snowmen.”

--Amount of lines per stanza: Six.

--Amount of stanzas: Two or more.

--Meter: Syllabic in the following format 8, 8, 8, 8, 12, 12

--Rhyme: a, a, b, b, c, c

Wrapped Refrain #2 – a Variation


This variation was also created recently by poet Jan Turner.



MUST HAVES


--Each stanza’s first ten syllables are repeated at the end of the last line of that stanza. So if your first stanza starts with the words “Tinsel tacos and pretty twinkly lights” the end of the last line of that same stanza must be “Tinsel tacos and pretty twinkly lights.”

--Amount of lines per stanza: Eight.

--Amount of stanzas: Two or more.

--Meter: Syllabic in the following format 14, 14, 8, 8, 8, 8, 14, 14

--Rhyme: a, a, b, b, c, c, d, d
