Competition

As many of my online and offline friends already now, I'm an amateur birder. This past weekend, my local group participated in our annual Christmas Bird Count. We count all the birds we see in our designated zones, but first we meet for breakfast and share stories from the year.

Birding can be a solitary hobby, like writing. Sure, we can have group hikes and events, but most of the time, it's just each birder out there on their own. There's a website we use to track our sightings, so we can compare our numbers with others, but mostly I think any kind of competition with birding involves competing with yourself.

I've always been a competitive person, but mostly it's about competing with myself, which I think can be quite healthy. I keep track of all sorts of things, like how many birds I've seen in the year, how many books I've read, how many contests I've participated in and how many reviews I've completed. And then I try to beat those numbers from year to year!

I think Writing.Com is a great site for interaction, communication and even competition, but I also think the best competition is with ourselves! Sure, we can compete against one another in WDC contests, but it's more of a challenge to ourselves, to improve our craft. WDC is the place where we can gather to communicate, share ideas and interact to inspire ourselves and others.

As we get closer to ending out the year (and the decade!), it's a good time to reflect on our accomplishments and to make goals for the upcoming year!

As always, keep on writing!
