Moments happen creating memories. Here is a cherished one of mine.
We always had 'Christmas Magic' at our house - a glittery confetti shaped like stars or trees or candy canes. Gold, silver, red, green or blue. The kids found it in their stockings and the presents from Santa. It started at the plate of cookies and rambled through the house to the tree. Some years they'd find some out in a trampled place in the snow where it looked like sleigh runners and reindeer footprints were. One year it was scattered up on the roof after we discovered my son looking out his attic window.
Because (to this day) I firmly believe in Santa due to (And I swear this is true!) my seeing him and his reindeer flying when I was really little, my kids believed even when their friends no longer did. Of course, my dad saying that when belief in Santa stopped, so did presents, might have had something to do with that.
Anyway, so my youngest child was perhaps ten and resisting to near temper-tantrum status going to see Santa and have her picture taken. "That's for babies!" she said. My mom cajoled and prodded and eventually, she capitulated. Santa asked her what she wanted and she whispered something in his ear. She then smiled the fakest smile ever, hopped off his lap and went off with my mom who was happy to have one last picture of Cara with Santa. I headed off in another direction towards the bookstore.
A few minutes later, I was tapped on the shoulder and turned around to see Santa standing there."Please tell me you know what 'purple Christmas Magic' is. Your daughter told me that if I was real, then all she wanted for Christmas was purple Christmas magic."
I told Santa all about our Christmas Magic confetti every year and how it was always red, green, gold, silver or blue. We agreed that it was essential I find 'purple' Christmas magic. I asked if he couldn't just sprinkle it around himself and he replied that he might forget so I should find it myself. I thanked him profusely for finding me. He simply said he had to.
Store after store I searched and finally, finally I found purple circles. By this time, I didn't care what shape they were, as long as it was purple. I bought the three packs they had.
Christmas morning, I was awakened by a high pitched squeal that probably shattered eardrums all the way to the North Pole. Purple Christmas magic was everywhere!!! It actually 'seemed' like there was far more than I'd scattered the night before, but maybe not.
"He's real! He's really real!" she screamed. "That's what I asked him for. I can't believe I got purple Christmas Magic!!"
There was purple magic in each gift she'd previously said she wanted for Christmas and by the plate where she'd left cookies and carrots, she found a note!
"Mom! Santa even wrote me a little letter! He said to believe in him because he believes in me!" By this time she was crying happy tears.
Years later, she still had some purple Christmas magic in her memory box! The kids are long grown and have kids and some, grandkids of their own. Santa always leaves them a gift at Grampa and Grand's house. And of course, Christmas Magic.
We keep finding the magic in odd places 'round the house all year long. It always makes us pause a moment and some odd Christmassy memory surfaces in May, July or September. My mom used to send me postcards mid-summer with just a gold star taped to it and the phrase, 'star alert!' written underneath. I'd call and we'd both talk about the memory it brought to mind. Kept the special feeling going year-round. (The stars were famous for embedding themselves in the carpeting!) I think they just liked hanging around!
Thus a moment led to memories that lead now to a story. Or a poem. |
