The rating system is perhaps the most debated aspect of WDC.
Many people hate the system claiming that it allows readers to give unbacked-up opinions to writers. Others hate it saying that there is no consistency to the ratings; some people give 5 stars and list a load of problems, others give 4 and then say the piece is perfect.
A lot of people love it. They view the system as a way of quickly identifying what readers think of your piece. Some lovers of the system view it as a good way of summing up a review; after giving your opinions on a piece, surely you would want to tell the writer how it all adds up.
Then there are people like me. They love it when it is used well. But, we hate it when it's misused or even abused. We see the system as a useful tool but not a necessity. Abolish it and we won't moan, but we'l use it if it's there.
What camp are you in? Do you love it, hate it or are you neutral?
