a terzanelle dedicated to my co-workers who stood strong through the storm
Hurricane Wilma

Lit with tough, cool prayers from the hour past
did we glow for a moment,
shining in the shattered glass?

What blue duty so important
fixed us to the red eye of the storm?
Did we glow for a moment?

We didn't know heroes could be born
in mud, as the curving cloud
fixed us to the red eye of the storm.

Biting back our soft unbelief, our doubt
of God's existence vanished
in mud, as the curving cloud.

Kindness soothed the bruised throats of the vanquished.
Our need for rock hard proof
of God's existence vanished.

We blazed with wavering faith
lit with tough, cool prayers from the hour past,
our need for rock hard proof
shining in the shattered glass.
