an experience in a parking lot led to self empowerment
There was a time
when I was young
I was afraid--
of older people, white people
anyone in authority.

They seemed strong,
confident, not intimidated.
Yes, there was a time. But no more.
Now I know they can be
just as terrified as I was.

Of little people, reminding them
of the youth and vigor they've lost.
Of dark people, with a past and spirit
of Kings and Queens
they couldn't begin to fathom.

So I walk tall and proud-
Defiant in the face of those
who demand submission;
Intractable by those whose
purpose is to humble and humiliate.

I speak out, tell my side
express my emotions--
my rage, hurt and pain to show
I am no longer a child
full of fear.
