HE SAID HELLO

He said hello, and I looked away in scorn,
not the kind of man I was looking for;
rather nondescript, a loser, I thought.
I didn't notice the sadness in his eyes
or the look of disappointment on his face.

He watched me as I turned to go outside
then held out his hand, a friendly gesture;
I had no time for him in my busy life,
I had places to go and people to see
that didn't include a tall, thin man.

I turned to face him, set on telling him
that he was a bother, an interruption;
and then I looked into his eyes,
felt his warm hand touch mine, cautiously,
causing me to melt when he smiled.

My eyes looked into his soul and I saw, at last,
all the dreams of my heart coming to life.
Frozen in time for just a moment I realized
that this man was the one I had waited for;
and the scorn I had felt at first was gone.
