You should be tired. A 15 mile forced march, 75 pounds of armor, 10 pounds of weaponry, and 2 hours sleep would normally find you looking for a place to fall over but your adrenaline keeps your fatigue at bay. Fog rolls across a deserted grassland while you position yourself among your line and check your pauldron straps. Your breath stops short as the first rays of the sun catch the sea of helmets and chain mail opposite this future graveyard giving your fortitude its greatest challenge. You are lucky as arrows fly by even if a few do find your shield. The regiment crashes into the full melee and you find yourself with two foes fronting. With great use of your shield you defend the knight to your left and with a parrying blow you sink your sword in between the gorget and breastplate of the man on your right but as he falls your sword is stripped from your hand by the dead weight dropping to the ground. With the man on your right gone, you pivot to better face the knight on your left. With practiced precision you reach and pull out your backup weapon to continue the fray. But what is it - that is what you are searching for. Flashing swords, acrobatic escapes, feats of strength, macho dialogue, and 40 bleeding bodies at the feet of a hero - Hollywood. True medieval melees were survived more on luck and resourcefulness than style and proper form. Some weapons listed are well known, some are not, but all are deadly.
