THANKSGIVING MEMORIES

Long years ago the family sat down at our table
to share a great feast, all were willing and able
to fill plates of turkey, stuffing, gravy and then
bring out the biscuits as grandma said "Amen".

All of my siblings smiled as dishes were passed,
the familiar stories told of Thanksgivings still last
when the gravy was lumpy but was still very good
poured over the food, eating more than we should.

Those days are gone, now I'm dining all alone,
sometimes at a restaurant, sometimes at home.
Faces from yesterday have slowly faded away,
in Heaven they now celebrate Thanksgiving day.

My children now have families of their own,
their lives are too busy for them to come home.
I'm doing quite well with memories and song
knowing that but one day I too shall be gone.

In the end, Thanksgiving scenes come and go,
as parents get older and their steps are slow.
Yet blessings abound that we need to recognize
and not question God on the 'hows' or the 'whys'.

I will thank God above for the gift of being alive;
He's helped me through, helped me to survive!
So many dear friends around to be thankful for,
how could I ever ask Him for anything more?
