Written in 1983 when Australia won the America's Cup.A proud moment in history. |
When Australia won the Yachting trophy -THE AMERICA'S CUP- in 1983, the Cup embarked on a journey to all Australian major cities. This poem was written in protest as to why regional towns were not given the privilege of seeing THE CUP. We all are Australians, through and through Our pride in our country is really true blue We sat up all night cheering a fabulous crew But they won't let us see the Cup! The day after our win I walked through own town I saw people dressed in green and gold all around No one was a stranger, no one wore a frown Overjoyed that we'd won the Cup! Capital cities have more people, I know Good luck to the many who can see it on show But there are millions of Aussies who'll miss - sad it's so 'Cause we'd all like to see the Cup! Another big race won't be held for some years That's plenty of time to hear all the cheers Of every single Aussie who cried those proud tears The day that we won the Cup! The circus, the Showmen, the Pop stars, the rest Can tour our great land from one town to the next But this is the show that must be the best COME ON ! ---- Let us see "OUR CUP" ! THREE YEARS LATER------- In the year '83, yachtsmen brought home a Cup From the U.S.of A and our spirits were up No crew had e'er captured the sailing world's prize "Australia 2" was the hero in yacht lovers' eyes. We paraded the Cup 'round the land for three years The people responded with flag waving and cheers And then the time came when we had to get up And prove to the world, we deserved that old Cup. Over five long months yachts sailed waters blue Around Perth -WA to see just which crew, Which yacht that would challenge and which would defend The America's Cup in the race at the end. Our own "Kooka 3" sailed her best - that we know But that man Dennis Connor was determined to show That he was the one would regain the fame And take back that Cup - be forgiven his shame. So we lost the big prize that we held for three years Don't dare feel ashamed or shed any tears We won their Mug once - we proved that we could We showed the whole world, and it made us feel good. To you, Dennis Connor, you sailed a great race But just for how long can you keep up the pace? The whole world knows now the Cup's not bolted down And any yacht club can wear Yachting's Crown. |
