A WHITE CHRISTMAS ON THE VOLCANO
This is a coming-of-age tale of friendship between two young people from different cultures and backgrounds brought together by Mount PInatubo -- a mountain they both love. The tribal boy (Mapanaginip) wishes for a white Christmas upon seeing pictures of it from his friend's (Elizabeth) family photos of winter wonderland in America. When the mountain erupts and covers the mountain with the "white stuff," for a moment, Mapanaginip thinks he got his wish and he rejoices. But the white stuff is really volcanic ash and is deadly, killing a lot of people, including his father. The boy blames himself for wishing for the white Christmas and the upheaval that followed. He punishes himself. Mapanaginip and Elizabeth part ways when the girl's family, along with all the U.S. servicemen and their families evacuated Clark Air Force Base below Mt. Pinatubo, never to return.. The military base is permanently damaged and will not reopen again.
