An entry for a contest - wish me luck!

A ROAD GOING NOWHERE

I have traveled many roads in my life,
some led to countries quite far away
and some were just old country roads
that seem to go nowhere at all today.

There was a time when the roads I saw
led to villages that stood with such charm.
People smiled and waved as I passed by
with the true love of my life on my arm.

Yesterday's dreams led me far from home
and the world offered me so much more
than a flickering candlelight waiting for me
inside that forgotten old cottage door.

As the years quickly passed by me
I once more thought of my old home.
My faltering steps led me down the road
where I had left her crying and alone.

Seems progress happened while I was gone
for the road I had walked on as a youth
was overgrown with brambles and weeds
and I finally faced the bitterest truth.

I walked alone on a road to nowhere,
not one trace of the memories remain.
I waited too long to come back again
for nothing is left - all I feel is shame.

I had made her a promise I couldn't keep
for the new roads I traveled were long.
I turn from the roadway, tears in my eyes,
and it takes all of my will to go on.
