About a Son/Introduction

“Once Upon a Time” seems an essential way to start this introduction. I met Chris’ Dad, Tim long before I starting dating him. We fought against loving each other but our desire was too strong. We had gone through some crazy, wild experiences with relationships in the past and we did not want to repeat the same mistakes. It felt like the battle of two very strong wills.

Tim and I dated about nine months. I was going back and forth between two households, my Mother’s home and his home. I worked as a Bellsouth Telephone Operator in the small city of Jasper where Tim resided. Tim worked in the coalmines. Our jobs were both good. We made an excellent income.

With a brief wedding on March 22, 1979, we included a quick honeymoon to Florida. We drove half way to Flordia on our wedding day. In The first night of our marriage was uneventful we were exhausted. In the morning we awoke and made love like there was no tomorrow. Chris was born nine months later at 7:14 a.m. Could life get any better than this? My life became a fairy tale when I married my handsome prince.

We came back and visiting with family. I had met Tim’s grandmother before and I really admired her. She was an Indian woman who was very spiritual and instilled in Tim the responsibility of carrying on the family name as he was the only one left to do this. She was a very tall, stout, big boned Indian woman with strong facial features. Granny Howard prayed that before she passed away she would see a grandson. Her prayer was quickly answered.

Chris was very active while he was in the womb. I felt him kick and when he had the hiccups, my swollen tummy would go up and down. I would laugh and beam when this happened showing everyone the miracle inside of me. I knew he was a little boy. Our offspring would be exceptional because their were seven granddaughters so Chris would be the first grandson. On my side there had not been a boy born in the family for three generations. I am an only child, only grandchild, and only niece. We knew spoiling was in order.

Our son was born on December 23, 1979. We named him Chris that meant Christ bearer. Daniel was his middle name and it meant God is my judge. He was a beautiful baby. He had a head full of black hair, blue eyes, and an olive complexion. Honestly, he was so pretty that one of the photography studios used his picture for advertisement. He was so sweet and never met a stranger. I loved him with a love that only a Mother possesses. As I breast-feed I wondered how I lived without him? I was so scared of losing him at night I would put him between my husband and me, and lay my hands on him to make sure he was breathing. Chris was so loved by everyone even at such a young age. Chris was lonesome as he grew so I knew it was time to have another child. Kim, his sister, was born on December 13, 1982. Ten days before his first birthday. He loved his sister, Kim, from the beginning. I always made him part of taking care of her. I was scared she would outshawdow him. I was almost heartbroken someone would make him feel inferior. That didn’t happen. I felt like the luckiest mother on earth because Chris adored her.

Time flew by and soon it was time for school. Chris excelled in everything! His grades were exceptionally good. Everyone would approach me and say, “He’s just so sweet and those blue eyes are going to make him a heartbreaker.” In junior high-school Chris joined the band and began playing the trumpet. The band director was wonderful and a great role model for Chris. He saw Chris’ talent at a young age and put him in the high school marching band. I was hesitating about this move because I knew that marching and playing an instrument was hard work. It was also tough for some students to be able to play an instrument and march at the same time. The band director assured me that Chris had the ability and said he could pretty much pick up any instrument and play. Soon he was playing the tuba. I felt this would give him opportunities when he finished high school on some great scholarships. Things were going well or so it seemed. I believed in Chris so much and knew he would be a successful young man one day. Little did I know………………………………..............................
