What to do, what to do?! Tender little annuals and an impending Nor'easter!!

Last week, as I sat on the nighttime step, I heard quavering howls and whoots. After googling "owls that sound like loons", I concluded that they were, in fact, loons. I had never heard loons where I was, in Manomet, or in my other seaside haunt, Swifts Beach.

Yesterday, I went to my home beach on Buzzard's Bay, where I grew up, for a much needed swim. Walking down, we saw a grey bird winging rapidly over the water. It wasn't a gull, I don't think, as its wingbeats were far too fast, and it presented a very slender profile.

The moon is nearly full, to my eye, and next door the dogs began baying, deep, rich, rolling notes that shivered the soul. Just prior, a lone wee owl wafted his mournful call through the shadowed trees. I stepped outside to see what the rumpus was about; a fierce, bright shooting star flashed through the corner of my eye, while some creature crashed through the forest. In the distance, last coyote howls faded in the forest.

In the tiny rock gardens, tomatoes thrive next to basil and parsley; lavender, its purple blossoms just faded, vies with oregano, thyme, sage... Morning glory rambles up a strategically placed old bird cage, while a rose shoots a single, joyously green-red branch straight into the balmy sky.

Cucumbers, planted in great tubs, climb the chain-link dog pen riotously, while yet more tomatoes, stocky patios, are busy growing their succulence. I will not buy tomatoes in grocery stores; there is just no comparison, as my grandmother used to say, between the insipid pink cardboard of a store-bought tomato, and the great, juicy red tomatoes fresh from the back door. Tomatoes do not ship well, and so the growers cannot pluck them as they should be, bursting with summer days of sun concentrated into one delicious orb, for the delicate fruit would rot in transit. The summer I don't have at least one tomato plant will be the summer I've shuffled from this mortal coil.

I just heard, from the forest, either horror-movie monster chomping noises, or deer hooves dancing about on the granite outcropping. Heard a raccoon scree, too, I think.

Garden's pretty much status quo this year-the cukes are merrily clambering up the chainlink of the dog pen, the tomatoes are fruiting right along, got basil, parsley, oregano, sage, lavender, more herbs, some veggies, a few petunias and violets...

It's been storming here since yesterday afternoon, sporadic flicks of purpley-blue light followed by great shaking crashes that sound as though God tipped a God-sized bureau over upstairs in his room. The gods are brawling!

...almost every day, cranes winging over the highway. I look over my blog and all it's become is cranes, eagles, cardinals (yes, I saw one today...). A pair of cranes today..

There are always cranes, or egrets, or herons...some large, long necked and legged, majestically flapping bird. And I frequently have hawks or some such wheeling in front of my car...

Finally, after weeks and weeks of soggy, raw, damp and ick weather, the stars twinkled in their sky, and all was well!

On the coast, a heavy nor'easter has gnawed the shore into tattered ribbons that have washed onto the sand as a carpet of seaweed. I haven't the most extensive experience with this bit of shore, but it's the first time I've ever seen so...much..seaweed. I'll have to get some for my garden!
