A response to the question of my chosen lonliness.
There’s something to be said for the lonely,
Whether by choice or just by chance,
Not to be pitied or consoled
for our lack of fleeting romance.
For me, it happens to be by choice
That I do not court and am not courted.
I have my reasons, theories, memories
That are part of my very long story.
But if you must know, its for you
That I try to keep my distance.
It’s my choice, it’s what I want—
Not just playful, coy resistance.
I don’t want to hurt you,
Make you suffer for my solo life
But don’t think I’ll play along…
There will be no sacrifice.
You’ve been after me for a  while,
And let’s say I finally succumb to your charms.
At first it’s fun, exiting.
I like the way I feel in your arms.
But eventually you think you fall in love
And then the irony begins:
It’s for fear I’ll have to let you go
That I never let you in.
I feel bad, as you keep falling,
So I convince my self to stay,
But this girl that you were after
Changes more and more each day.
You yearned for what you saw before
But what you get isn’t always what you see.
And then I’m forced to say the truth…
“Sorry, it’s not you. It’s me.”
Because I'm sure there's someone out there,
So quick to commit, offer the world.
She’ll probably be perfect for you.
Indeed, I hope you find that girl.
But for me, I’m not so eager.
Don’t name our kids or plan when we will wed.
And thank you, but no thank you,
I prefer my empty bed.
So you may think that you can love me,
And it’s likely that you may,
But let me save you all the heartache
And let’s just go our separate ways.
This isn’t vanity or ego,
So please don’t take it so,
But through trial, mostly error,
These are just the facts I’ve come to know.
So please don’t take it personally,
Because you’re not the only one,
But despite how I feel for you,
I know what must be done.
There’s something to be said for the lonely
So don’t scorn the choices that we make.
Just think, the next time we reject you
It might  be for your own sake.
