HALLOWEEN DREAMING.

I dreamed about some ghosts last night,
Headless horsemen riding.
Screaming banshees and crones on brooms
Sending me a-hiding.

Huge pumpkins with their orange eyes
Peering through the doorway,
Flickering fiery stares at me
In the ghostly foray.

The goblins and the evil elves
Took flight when I would throw
A handful of some sticks and stones
In hope that they should go.

Somehow they were not scared away
As on they came again.
Squealing, howling, hissing, shouting,
Intent on causing pain.

With strength that comes from utter fear
I pulled myself upright,
Then lunged toward the open door
And slammed and locked it tight.

I don't know if I slept or tossed
But when I woke next morn,
Behold there were some shattered chunks
of pumpkin on my lawn!

And wrappers from some treats that once
were stored in cans and jars.
How did they come to be out here?
Who smeared the window bars?

Methinks that it was not a dream
But in my sleepy throes,
I was the victim who some mean
Young trick or treaters chose!
