God thought His own Son a small price to pay to save His creation.
And the Anger of God waxed hot
Against a stiff-necked people who
Ignored His Word and heeded Him not,
A people who sought, as perhaps do you,
Only to do each his own will,
And though they thought the devil would take
The hindmost, the devil as ever took still
Whatever he would will and make
Of men such fools and lost souls
Who knew not even that they were lost,
Even as Satan shoveled coals
That made men’s misery the cost
Of such arrogance.

Yet God’s anger was never so great
As God’s love and pity for dumb Man
Whose own hard fate themselves create
And by their choice themselves would damn
Thus He thought Himself to give
And make for men a way of grace
A way in which men could live,
In joy and peace before God’s face.
And so God came to be as one
With man  to live and die that day.
He  thought it, did God’s only Son,
Such a small price to pay
To save His world.
