Encouragement for my wild teenage son

Are you going east, my son,
or have you traveled south?
Have you found direction now
inside your wounded heart?

Anger is the leash inside,
it's harnessing your tears;
frightened boy inside the man,
you cry because of fear.

Have you known some happiness,
in eighteen years of life?
Or joyfullness while watching
brillant skies on Christmas night?

Or maybe tracing moonlight,
when ocean tides were high,
or dancing in Summer's rain,
so gleefull in delight?

Have you felt the truth of love
for family and friends?
Or heartache when you need someone,
so close against your skin?

If these are your memories,
you've grown into a man.
All that you have known so far,
will help you as you plan.

So thirst for dreams desired,
those held inside your heart;
delayed when you were younger,
but just about to start.

To know of life and sorrow,
is to know a soul's true worth.
To be a part of God's great plan,
is enjoying time on earth.
