Prompt: Write a story or poem about a birthday celebration for a person turning 100 years old where the party guests are all people the birthday boy or girl hasn't seen in years. For "The Writer's Cramp

32 lines

Good morning, Mrs. Hobbs, I see,
Today's your birthday, yes, indeed.
Friends and family all will gather
to celebrate one hundred years.

Why can't they leave me all alone?
My money's all they really want.
Tell me, where were they on Christmas,
or yesterday, or Tuesday last?

So now the party has begun.
Her nephew Jim and sonny Ron;
first time in years to see his mom.
She's mad as hell, the nurse can tell.

She smiles her vapid, senile smile;
calls them names of relatives gone.
They nod and wait for nurse to say,
she's tired now and needs some rest.

She settles in her comfy room,
satisfied as her trick is played,
And with the nurse who's now her friend.
a sweet warm cup of tea she shares

She came here to this restful home,
and met a friend who is still true.
The nurse who doesn't work here still,
but came to share her special day.

Ann came to know Mrs. Hobbs way back,
and love her like her mom, now gone.
She comes to see her every day
to laugh and talk and share some tea.

Ann sent the party invites out,
and helped the lady plan the act,
For Ann is Mrs. Hobbs best friend,
and as of many years ago, her sole and only heir.

For my dear family friend, Mrs. Hitchens, who on August 15, 2008 will be 103. I hope she gets to celebrate it and many more. At 100 she was still as sharp as a tack!
