The car wreck at the fatal Chissal underpass.

Fatal Underpass

This story has been written from my memories as a boy. There at the old railroad underpass that crosses the highway. Many a young drivers and older ones alike. Lost their lives by speeding through it.

I recall a fatal wreck that happened one night. This young mans car hit the side of the concrete underpass. He was trapped in the tangled mass of steel. Every time the firemen tried to free him from the wrecked car. He cried out in a scream of pain. The steel was embedded in his body he felt any movement of the car. I listened to the screams he made for hours. what a terrible way to die. After hours of enduring the pain he yielded to his injuries.

I heard later he was a soldier on leave, who had served his country in the states Army, overseas. I guess he had been drinking and having a good time, and lost control of the car.

If the old highway was straighter and wider at the old underpass he may be still living. He may have drove through the underpass that night. This wreck at the underpass happened many years ago. The soldier was driving a new 1956 Mercury car.

There were many bars located on that stretch of the old highway. I guess maybe he stopped at one or two and he simply drank to much!
