A poem written when my first husband died in 2001.
You are dying as I breathe,
losing ground with a setting sun.
I wait; helpless, angry, undone.
Listen to your slowing heartbeat,
I fail to understand, fight a mad desire to run.

I am here, watching your torture.
I battle alone, crazy with thoughts.
You lay in medical menagerie,
surrounded by strangers,
who know nothing of you and me.

Promises we made,
hearts and hands entwined.
Once upon a true fantasy,
we wrote a storybook of bliss,
for a love belonging to us.

Happy days, loving years,
babies cradled between us.
We dreamed on critter clouds of delight.
Soft whispers, Marvin Gaye sang
as we traveled gently into the night.

The doll house, a replica built of our house
a tiny clock chimed your last heart beat.
So haunt me softly, a cheek caress,
whisper 'Punkin' so I will be sure
my journey here has been blessed.
