I wrote this after I made a very significant promise to someone.
Promise
By Monika L. Brown

Here I am;
Back to the beginning-
Alone as I notice
The crack in the river’s dam;
But this time,
I sense a difference.
Now I am certain
That I am acknowledged;
On the edge of convergence
With a separate heart.
Without a word,
I take a step closer,
As the trees surrounding
Warn me not to move forward.
I feel my soul
Push me further,
And I notice
My free-will wither.
Controlled by this new force,
I move forward still,
And feel my
Heart and mind divorce,
And I suddenly see
The flaw in the dam
Grow far worse-
Only for me.
I sprint towards it now,
And as I cover the leak,
I ask myself, How?
How could I
Allow it to break?
I make a promise.
I will stand here
Until the river dries
If that’s what it takes;
And now I feel it.
A warm hand
Rests upon my back,
As I realize
That I’m not forgotten,
Although there is
Still something that I lack.
