Written for Sherri Gibson's Coloring The World Contest using her prompt -
AN UNSUNG HERO

The birth had been difficult and the pain was deep,
the doctor stood by quietly, wishing for sleep.
It would take all his skill to save mother and son,
he must move quickly for the battle to be won.

Another doctor joined him in the middle of the night,
they worked and prayed that it would be all right.
Morning brought relief as the son breathed on his own
and the mother cried tears of joy, she was not alone.

The doctor looked around but could not see the man,
the doctor who came to give him a much needed hand.
The nurses on duty said he was the only one there
and praised his skill and the very excellent care.

Now the doctor knew that without the grace of God,
both mother and son would be laying 'neath the sod.
Was that an unsung hero, where could he find out,
just what had happened, what it was all about?

Passing the hospital chapel, he paused to look in,
saw a figure by the window, quite tall and thin.
He went inside, ready to take the man to task
but there near the crucifix was a surgeon's mask.

The man was gone - or was he ever really there?
The doctor felt a sudden peace, a lifting of care.
Now he understood that something happened when
only God's love could have made them well again.
