The Awakening
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the sun shining brightly in my window, I shook my twin sister, Sheila's shoulder wanting her to wake-up. As any 4 year old would be, I was impatient to start the day and knew that our mom would be coming home from the hospital with my baby brother! I wanted to be ready to hold him and see my mom. She had been in the hospital for so long giving birth and today was the day she was coming home!

Looking out my upstairs bedroom window I could see most of the entire farm that we lived on. My dad's truck was gone so I knew he was probably on his way to pick mom and our baby brother up. Oh! The fun of having a real baby instead of just dolls to dress up and play with! My heart was full and I knew that my world was perfect!

Sheila rolled over, opening one eye and snuggled deeper into the warmth of her blankets. Grabbing the corner of the blanket I pulled, tumbling her out on the hardwood floor. Laughing I headed downstairs, sliding down the bannister by wrapping my short legs around it, landing with a plop at the bottom. Such fun it was!

No one was in the kitchen as I raced through grabbing a plain piece of bread off the counter. With so many in our family if you waited to eat there would be nothing left. As the screen door slammed behind me, I could hear Sheila screaming from the vicinty of the stairs, that the next time I yanked her out of bed, She was telling dad. I wasn't too worried about that.

Heading for the tire swing, I climbed up on it and started swinging, all the while keeping my eyes pinned on the road. I could see my brothers over by the fence watching the goats butt heads with each other and imitating them. I was too excited to join them and staying where I was I knew I would get the first chance to peek at my new brother! Who would want to miss that?

Sheila came out still pouting with her bottom lip turned down. Dragging her blanket behind her she let it drop on the ground by the swing and started pushing me so I could go higher. I remember how she looked with her thumb stuck in her mouth, just standing there pushing.

Just then I heard my dad's truck pull up in the driveway and shut off. Dad opened the truck door to get out as I jumped off the tire swing, running as fast as I could to see the baby first. My little legs were pumping so fast and my heart was feeling like it would explode with happiness. My mom and new baby brother were finally home!

As my brothers and Sheila came crowding up to the car, I grabbed my mom around the legs intending to never let her go. All the while I was looking for this new brother of mine and couldn't find him! Did she forget to bring him home, was my dad holding him. what?

With one quick back hand my mom knocked me head over heels backwards with my ears ringing and seeing stars! I sat there on the ground, stunned, tears running down my cheeks and lips bleeding profusely. Wiping my bare arm over my stinging mouth, tears continued to spurt out of my eyes landing with a wet plop on my little chubby legs.

Mom was yelling and not making sense to me but that could be becuse I was in a stae of shock over being knocked down. My eye was starting to swell and my vision blurred so the yelling was cusing me some confusion. I could not understand what happened. Finally I started to hear what she was saying and I was desolate. "Its you and Sheila's fault that I couldn't bring your brother home to stay. I gave him away, I have too many kids already and if I could sell you both maybe I could have kept him but no, here you both are still! If I had my way you'd both be gone! I never wanted either one of you so stay away from me! I hate to look at you both"!

Sheila came towads me and we looked each other in the eyes. Mine were swelling shut rapidly and hers had a fine sheen of tears in them but she refused to let any fall. Blood was still oozing from my lips and my brothers took my  hand to guide me over to the horse trough.. Their intention was to wash off the blood and clean me up. This was so none of us would have to go back in the house. One of my brothers brought out a red bandana, from his back pocket and dipped it in the water. Genly he tipped my face up to his.
