this is a paper i wrote recently for my drugs and society class
After doing some reading and talking with a Law Enforcement professional I do not believe that the legalization of marijuana for any reason medical or not would benefit society. From my understanding medical marijuana has no dramatic health benefit. It does not affect pain in the ways that pain killers do but alters how your brain processes so that while you are high from the drug you are experiencing an altered state of mind which gives the illusion that your pain ahs been reduced.  Also from my understanding it does no better job than FDA approved pain killers that are currently being used legally. As for it being coming a legally controlled substance I feel it would be a huge problems.

I feel that marijuana can most easily be compared to alcohol because of its debilitating affect on the body. This country is having a hard enough time controlling alcohol substance abuse adding marijuana to the mix would just add to the problem of law enforcement. One problem would also be determining what a legal amount would be and having an effective way of measuring that on the street.

I know someone who has and has also talked with others she knows through her struggle with cancer. It has awful side effects. It makes them ill and high. The high state that you feel is why you have pain relief not because it actually affects your CNS like pain killers. You can do the same thing with alcohol. Many people do become addicted to pain killers however because of their composition they can be more easily controlled, amounts of the drugs in the substances can be measured and tested and can be deemed to be all of the exact amount. Knowing the exact composition of marijuana that you would smoke would be difficult due to its organic nature. (Joffe, Yancy 2004)

No one has really studied the health affects of marijuana to know the extent of damage it causes to users and their children. Another thing is that like alcohol it alters your perception and reaction, you can take pain killers and still drive but if while it's illegal to smoke pot and drive how would making it legal change that? You can have your children taken a way from you if your drinking habit interferes with your ability to care for them, I see and I'm sure you do as well how making marijuana legal would cause neglect. I see no reason that proves how it may benefit society.

Alcohol has causes thousands of deaths since this country was founded not only from direct negligence but is negative health effects as well. I can only see marijuana having the same impact.
