When you see that special person...
I see him and I have to remind myself to breathe.

Paralyzed with envy, attraction, and fear I watch, wait until he passes, and then exhale.

My lungs forgive my weakness and I began to breathe again, faster and faster.

He turns and walks my direction.

Faster still as my lungs force oxygen in and out at a rapid pace.

He opens his mouth to speak.

I fear I might hyperventilate.

"What are you doing tonight?" He asks, his perfect smile and perfect voice greeting my senses as is the sweet smell of his cologne.

I open my mouth to speak.

From behind me I hear her say in her twangy accent "Nuthin."

I freeze again, breathless.

He walks past me.

Invisible and breathless.

High School Crush.
