Reflections upon the state of the state.
Searching under couch cushions
for enough change to buy bread
and eating hot dogs with no bun,
how did we get to this state?

I remember the American dream,
but it is time to lose rose lenses,
goals have fallen short it seems.
How did we get to this state?

Tightened belts at their last loop
have given way to a hopelessness;
heads lower, shoulders droop.
How did we get to this state?

They make promises of improvement,
but promises don't curb hunger,
like the bread of God, heaven sent.
Pray to get out of this sad state.
