An Old Short Shots Contest Entry
A New Life

The door to the diner swung open hard, bouncing off the wall behind Mick and Sonia's table.  Three men rushed in, all wearing balaclavas, waving their guns in the air.  They stopped at the front door and turned the sign to 'closed' and pulled the blinds.  The diners started to scream when they realised that this was a robbery.

"Everybody sit, hands on tables where I can see 'em!"

Shocked diners started to stand, outrage on their faces.  The rest just stood there, too frightened to move.  Two of the men made their way to the counter, the third made his way to the middle of the restaurant and yelled for silence.  His voice was loud and commanding, all the diners turned to stare and found themselves looking down the barrel of the gun now pointed at them.

"Shut up, sit down!"

The bullet smacked into the wall above Mick's head, plaster showering down on him his mouth twisted into a hard line, his boyish good looks vanishing completely in his anger.

Sonia watched him closely, thankful that the other diners and the robbers were unable to see his face.  Trouble seemed to follow them around, this was supposed to be a new country and a new start, on the straight and narrow.

The tall guy wearing the black balaclava started making his way round the diners, black bag in tow he pointed the gun at them, ordering them in a muffled voice to drop all wallets, cell phones and keys into the bag.  He then tapped them on the head with the gun, calmly telling them to keep their hands on top of the table.

The other two robbers wore identical red balaclavas, dressed in black jeans and t-shirts they looked like twins.  One seemed to be the leader, periodically the others would look at him and he would nod.  He was now standing in the middle of the diner, gun in hand watching the customers and staff.  The second man made a waitress empty the cash register, his patience looked like was wearing thin as the young girl fumbled for the notes and kept dropping them.  Tears streamed down her face her, eyes wide with fear she looked like she was about to collapse.

Mick watched out the corner of his eye as the black balaclava guy approached their table, he kept a lid on his anger for Sonia.  This was a fresh start and he wasn’t about to let these muppet's ruin it for them.  He pulled his wallet from his inside jacket pocket, careful not to expose the gun strapped there.  He placed it on the table in front of Sonia, next he placed his cell phone and car keys on the table.  They were just things and with hardly any cash in his wallet he wasn't bothered about losing them.

Sonia smiled, relieved Mick was playing along, half sad that she missed the adrenaline rush.  Black balaclava guy was at their table now, Sonia pushed the wallet, her purse, both cells and keys into the black sack.  She could just see the robbers eyes, they were pure black and staring at her intently.  His tongue snaked out and licked his lips and his eyes rested on her breast's.  Her too tight black tee didn’t leave much to the imagination.

Mick watched the guy in the black balaclava leer at Sonia, anger pulsed through him, his head throbbed.  These muppet's were seriously taking the piss.  He looked at Sonia, he could see the annoyance in her eyes as she watched the robber lick his lips suggestively again.  Mick inclined his head to her, a question, did she want to have some fun?  They had tried being straight for 48 hours and it was turning into a disaster, fuck it, he missed his old life. He didn't know anything else, this was who he was.  He looked at Sonia, it was who she was.

Sonia looked at Mick, his eyes glinted in pleasure and he smiled lazily, the perfect predator.  Sonia felt her own heart pound in anticipation, knew there was the same glint in her eyes.  No-one could say they hadn’t tried, well they could but she'd shoot them.  She knew men like this guy, his muscles bulged under his white t-shirt, he thought he was a predator, he thought he was going to have some fun with her.  Sonia hated men like that.

Lazily Sonia stretched, arching her back, giving the robber a better view.  She could see the leader standing there, looking dumb, gun pointed at the floor.  He knew something was going on but he just didn’t know what.  The whole diner was silent now, everyone had their eyes on Mick who had now turned round to face the black balaclava guy.  Cold dead eyes stared at him and he didn’t even notice, he could not take his gaze from Sonia's breasts.

“Knock yourself out love.”

Sonia nodded her head to Mick, he moved fast, before anyone could even gasp his fist had smashed into the robbers face.  He grabbed the gun before it hit the ground and turned and shot the remaining two robbers.  The shots echoed loudly in the silence and everyone stared in shock as the small hole in each robbers forehead started to bleed.  Their eyes froze on Mick as they toppled over, their faces slapping off the tiles.  The diners were standing now, heading for the exit, giving Mick a wide berth.

“Thanks Love, I didn’t like the way that guy was looking at me.”

Mick reached out and stroked her cheek, always amazed at how beautiful she was, how sexy he still found her.  Sonia reached down and grabbed the black sack of goodies.  Well, waste not want not.  A groan sounded by her feet.  Sonia looked up at Mick and he offered her the gun, butt first.  Gently she gripped the gun, her finger on the trigger.  Her breathing slowed and she felt powerful, had she really been about to give this up?

Calmly she waited, after what seemed like an eternity but was only seconds, the remaining robber opened his eyes and stared up at her.  This time he managed to get his eyes past her breasts to the gun in her hand, his gun.  Before he could move Sonia placed the barrel against the side of his head and pulled the trigger.  The recoil pulled her shoulder back sharply, the pain was gone in an instant.  She stuck the gun in her jeans and smiled at Mick.

“It’s good to be back babe.  Lets get out of here.”

Sonia stepped over the corpse, careful not to tread in the blood starting pool around him, she didn't want to get her boots dirty.  She  slipped her hand into Mick's as he led her from the diner, her other hand gripping the black sack.  Sirens screamed in the distance as they made their way to the black convertible they had just purchased.  A lovely car, full leather interior, the complete works.  They had planned to spend their time on the road, just driving.

Mick jumped in car and opened the door for Sonia.  Her heart thundered in her chest as the sirens got closer, only a few minutes away now.  Mick turned the car and the engine roared to life, they smiled at each other, laughing.  This was how they had met and Sonia knew Mick was remembering the same day ten years ago that she was.

“The chase is on, babe.”

The car screeched out of the little car park and onto the main road, a few diners were still standing outside, a bit miffed, waiting for the police.  They watched the flash black convertible drive off at over a hundred miles an hour.  No-one was quite sure what had happened exactly.

When the police arrived they were as confused as the diners.  They had a car park full of people, a diner with 3 dead bodies and not one soul could tell them what had happened or give them a description of the couple.  All they remembered was their eyes and the guys smile.
