A short story
I close my eyes.

I need glasses. I'm sitting in a doorway to a pawnshop reading a book. The light is good here. I have to close my eyes after every sentence.

It must be nearly four am. There are very few cars passing on the street and it is almost peaceful. It's nice when there aren't many cars passing by.

The hookers have all gone home. They know my name, the hookers. They smile at me when they're working the street. They call me “Insane-Wayne”. I don't like the name so much, but I like the smiles. I don't think they mean it in a bad way. They saw me fighting the cops. If a cop tries to take me in again I don't know how I will react.

I never know.

Last time it wasn't pretty.

I read another line in the book and close my eyes. Read another line. Close my eyes. It takes me a long time to read an entire page. It's not a bad book. It's for kids, so the print is larger. “Harry Potter”. I like it a lot.

It's cold and it's damp out tonight. I long to put up a curtain between the stoop and the street so that I am out of sight. It would still be cold and damp, but I would love to be out of sight.

I asked my daughter if I could live with her.

I know why she turned me down.

I am a bit lost.

I need a curtain. A bedspread. A tarp. I keep telling myself to find something to put up for a few hours so I can be out of sight.

I close my eyes.
