A young man is caught up in a world of drugs and poverty and looks for a way out
The bullets flew by Marcelo as he ran srtaight into the alley. He thought about his daughter..If he would ever see her agaim. His wife, would she ever forgive him for leaving her alone to raise child. At most he thought he would do a little time for dealing, He didn't think someone would try to kill him. The alley was a dead end, the bullets had stopped. He turned to see if the shooter was still behind him, no one was there.
All he had to do was take a package from point A to point B. Thats it, no strings, so shit. He didn't ask what was in box and he didn't care. He was getting paid $500 for this little trip. And he needed the money...badly. "If you get caught with this shit you make sure you keep your mouth shut" the guy with the thick gold chain told marcelo. He was a big guy, he wore a track suit. Marcelo asked himself what a fat guy like that was wearing a track suit for if he looked like he could hardly walk. " I aint gonna say nothin" Marcelo put the box in a duffle bag and headed for the door.
He was glad to get out of the apartment, the smell of urine was stifling. He always hated having go into crackhouses to get work. But if that was where the work was thats were he would go. He trew the duffle bag in the trunk and drove away. He wasan't worried too much about the cops. They didnt come much around this neigherhood anyway. They would only come if there was a body, and even then it would take some time. Marcelo drove to the highway and started to make his way to brooklyn. He dropped of the package at an apartment in Park Slope, some white kids took it from him, gave him an envelope and sent him on his way.
The envelope was thick in marcelo's hand. It felt good to hold on to that much paper. He drove back to the Bronx and gave the envelope to the fat guy. He was very pleased and gave Marcelo a $100 tip. "not bad" thought Marcelo, he made $600 in just under four hours. Marcelo drove home to his wife and daughter, he'd been lying to them. Telling his wife he got a constrution job in the city. Instead he was muling drugs for one of the biggest dope dealers in New York State.
His wife gave him a kiss and his daughter ran to his arms. He really loved them more than anything. He could smell dinner cooking in the kitchen. HIs cell phone rang and soon he was out the door again. The boss wanted to talk to him personally. He'd been working for them for about a year.It was hard keeping the secret form his family. The late night calls and leaving the house without warning werent helping.
His boss was a small guy in a suit, No matter the ocassion he always wore a suit. There was a rumor he even played a basketball game in a siut. They called him El Chulo because of all the women he used to be a pimp. El Chulo told him he was getting some work and he wanted him to sell it for him. Marcelo couldn't say no. He knew this score could set him up for a while. He shook El Chulo's hand, now it was official.
He gave him three ounces of pure heroin to cut. From those three ounces he could quadruple his money. He set up shop on a corner not too far from where he told his wife he worked. Soon fiends from all over the city started coming to Marcelo. The line streched out around the block. He'd payed off a few dirty cops so he wasant worried about being botherd by them. He also started putting some work aside for himself. So he could sell a little on the side. El Chulo wouldn't miss a gram here and there. He was tired of haing to pay him off.
El Chulo was a pimp but he was also a math whiz. And those grams here and there were starting to add up. He didnt like it when people took form him without asking...too disrespectful. He called Marcelo in to talk to him. " I gave you an opportunity and you got greedy Marcelo". El chulo drew his gun form his waste band. "And if I kill you now? would you like that?. or are you one of those people who likes surpises" El chulo smiled...his gold tooth shining in the light. Macelo was scared, so scared he pissed his pants. He wasnt cut out for this game but now it was to late to turn back. "Please Chulo let me explain. I didn't know what iwas doing, please I have a family" El Chulo cocked his head to the side. "Maybe I let you live and it teaches you a lesson, Maybe I kill you teach everyone a lesson. Chulo put the gun away and let Marcelo go.
Marcelo ran back to his car. He sat there in the front seat breathing heavily, thinking about evrything. He drove home but he could see no one was home. His wife said she'd be stepping out for the day. He was afraid to get out of the car. He got out of the car and made a quick dash into his house. He did a quick sweep of the house to make sure no one was htere...waiting for him. He took off the urine stained pants and his sweat drenched shirt and got in the shower. He cried like a baby, He knew El Chulo wouldn't forget. He dressed himself in a hurry, he didn't want to be there when his wife got home. Too many bruises on is face to explain right now.
He drove to his stashhouse in east 96th street. Such a nice neighberhood, Alot of his clients came from this side of town. Mommy and daddy's money goes a long way around there. He felt safe here no one knew about the stash house. He got his gun from his lock box and loaded it. He was going to get El Chulo before he got him. He went to his car and started driving to EL Chulo's place.
El chulo lived in the meanest projects in the bronx. Even though he had the cash to live wherever he wanted, he chose to stay in the hood. Now that choice was going to haunt him. EL Chulo was standing with his boys by the childrens play yard. Marcelo walked staight up behind him. He took out his gun and without a word and before any of his friend could stop it he shot El Chulo in the back of the head. El chulo fell flat on his face in his $3000 suit.
He had lost them, they wanted revenge. But he knew that with El Chulo dead his friends would be to busy dividing up his territory and money. Whoever chased him gave up and went to get his piece.
He went home to his house and his wife. He explained everything to her. She said she hated him and cried. She would leave him and without her he was nothing. He begged for her to stay like he begged El Chulo for his life. But there was no forgiveness for his deception and greed. She was gone along with his daughter. Even though he got away with is life from the game, he couldnt really save it.....he lost it all. THE END
