A WALK IN THE WOODS

The morning sun's rays on the path beckoned me
as I opened the door and stepped into a new day.
The snow has stopped falling, leaving the limbs
of the trees glistening with beauty in a special way.

Watching my step, I started my walk in the woods,
sidestepping the rocks and a few fallen branches.
It was nature at its finest, a morning to remember.
Listening to the birds sing, my renewed spirit dances.

My eyes catch a blur of reddish-brown running past,
a fox startled by my intrusion on its resting place.
The chipmunks chatter and a Blue Jay takes flight.
I must have wakened their world to a daredevil race.

A rabbit scurried across the path with its mate,
I swear I could see a gleam in its eye, but then
it goes unnoticed by the mate, its soft fur unruffled
by the attention shown, spring has yet to begin.

Old bones aching, I turn and head homeward,
the walk in the woods provided enough for me.
The scent of pine and the afterglow of nature
will be quite nourishing and what a joy to be free!!
