For too long, words have been mistaken for compassion.
Caring Is Not Enough

As people, we're so far apart
that we can't see beyond ourselves.
We know the truth that lies within
but keep it on the highest shelves.

Those times I take my blinders off,
it's not surprising that I see –
reflected in the eyes of others,
my hopes and dreams: pieces of me.

We accept the pain we daily see
or simply turn our eyes away
instead of reaching out to help,
or offering a better way.

The magic of a gentle touch,
the joy we find in sharing,
can be a part of everyday...
it's more than simple caring.

It's not enough to shake our heads
and mumble words of piety
or give some money to a group
for one more useless committee.

Start within your neighborhood
or randomly along the street.
Share an act of kindness
with a stranger that you meet.

How can we turn a blind eye
as we watch as hope departs
and the suffering continue
mirrored in pieces of our hearts?

We know the answers from within;
we understand the Golden Rule.
Beyond the words, we need to act
for that is change's fuel.
