What do we really know about Dickens' Miss Havisham?
                   "Where He Left Me"

Reaching for the empty space
where he left me
cold and unadorned.
Chipped cups of stale tea
and an old faded table lace.
Who then would come to mourn?

Lovers known to no one;
secrets stored, memories locked
where he left me.
Dust covered music carefully boxed.
Spiders and I weave and weep alone.
No one comes with the key.

Wind and thunderous rain;
witnesses to the departing scene
where he left me.
Beseeching, lamenting sounds so keen
breaking my barren window pane.
Tear soaked years wear rust that plea.

My misty reflections in a cracked mirror
reaching for the empty space
where he left me unattended.
Unbroken cobwebs leave no trace
of my journey; smoky veiled and nearer
a spiritual place where love is mended.
