Someone had to get the message to the Major to stop the war.
The sting of the whip lay into his flesh. Arnie screamed in agony. His thoughts turned to Kara. At least she got away.

An F-15 ripped across the sky. The bright launch of missiles flashed in the valley.

Kara walked into the room. Arnie noticed the enemy’s flag etched on her shoulder.

“Let’s hope your flyboys are better shots than you are a kisser.”

……………….

Arnie and Kara panted as they ran from the dingy prison. They could hear the sirens going off and knew they would be pursued. At least they had a two kilometer lead on them. But now, they were at a crossroads.

“Which way?” Kara said with her hands on her knees.

“It’ll be morning soon. The first path leads up to the dam. The second runs down and along the river. Perhaps we should split up. It’ll double our chances of getting the message to the Major. He’s got to know the information we’ve gathered, before they attack and start a war.”

“I’ll take the dam.” Kara gulped air and took a few steps.

Arnie grabbed her arm and spun her around and kissed her. They gazed into each other’s eyes. “I hope we see each other again. Good luck.” With those words, Kara disappeared into the woods.

…………………

The soldiers marched Arnie into the compound. His ribs sore from several rifle butts.

“Throw him in the cell,” The commander barked.

Arnie was led to a damp, dark cell where another prisoner was being held. He was shoved to the floor, and his ribs howled in pain.

“I’m Kara.” She lifted her head to reveal a black eye and swollen cheek.

“Finally, someone to confide in. I’m Arnie. The nuclear facility isn’t one. It’s a children’s hospital.”

Days turned into weeks as they planned their escape.
