Inviting students to join global rhythms

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page”
St. Augustine of Hippo

Along the eastern border of Asia , a chain of magnificent islands float on the northern waters of the pacific. In that region of the globe, gigantic mountains tower above the lands like huge sculptures. Most of the inhabitants live on the eastern side to witness the sun rise daily from the ‘peaceful sea’, and later on watch it glide again behind their western mountains. That is why they call their nation “The Land of the Rising Sun”. It is the place we call Japan .
Do you know that Cameroon , my homeland, on the western coast of Africa has over two hundred and thirty tribes, each with a distinct language? This, and many other facts make our world what it is: a fascinating mosaic of traditions and cultures. That is what made me join Global Rhythm. A semester with Global Rhythm is like taking a trip around the world. As a member of this club, I have been able to meet people from far and wide, and through them I now understand those cultural aspects that make us the same, although distinct. Those things that unite us in our diversity.
Global Rhythm offers us a chance to read most of the pages of the world. The more people we get, the more pages we can read. That is why we are inviting you to join us now and share with us primary information from all ends. Socialize, experience the world beyond the media and learn all that has always intrigued you about different cultures from the peoples. Global Rhythm is not a club only for international students, as it has been thought to be. Its doors are open to Americans as well. Come and contribute to the diversity. Meetings are held at the back of the library on dates agreed upon by the members.

By bringing together people of different nations, Global Rhythm contributes to global unity. As a world in miniature, we host numerous fun activities that keep the world together. For example, we participate in sports by playing at the intramurals on campus. During the fall of 2004 and spring 2005, we competed against other teams at volley ball and soccer. Although we didn’t emerge first in any of these events, we played soccer all the way to the finals, winning the second position. But, in the spring of 2006, we lifted the soccer trophy on campus. We are definitely not the best soccer players on campus, but it is that spirit of togetherness that made us the best team.

Besides the intramurals, the club also organizes, as part of its yearly activities, a pool party early in the spring semester. This is held at the residence of bbbbb, the Director of Global Education. The pool is indoors with water just as warm as you would have it during that frozen period of the year. If a pool doesn’t sound satisfactory, there is even a warmer Jacuzzi to sit in, relax and let the bubbling water massage away the weariness of the semester. Moreover, the music, ping pong board, card and other indoor games keep the day’s fun alive.

More fun comes with the international dance organized yearly. At this great ball, tickets are sold to students around and we have them join us as we dance to the Global Rhythm. With our experienced DJ bbbbbb from Jamaica , our only fear is not to get our dancing guests too excited to the point of passing out. You would listen to and enjoy music from around the globe, watch, learn and join the dances from the different places and the improvisational moves.

Besides dancing, the club is also planning to get a band especially to entertain at the international dinner it organizes. The club has always wanted to be ‘musically active’ and a band could be a good step to get its members to sing. If you love music, join and sing with us informally for fun. We were impressed recently when we heard Kevin’s voice echoing like that of a superstar sometime while we jammed. Not that long ago, Kevin would not have dared to open his mouth to sing for fear of offending his neighbors. The club doesn’t aim at training singers, but its desire is to offer an environment that would entice even the shyest of us all to awaken the dormant singer in them, and so have fun.

These activities, coupled with camping, ice skating, the international dinner, etc, are only a pint of the fun we get. You too have the right to this much fun. You can make up for all the time you’ve already lost by joining now. Meet me or my president bbbbb anywhere on campus, or send an email to bbbbb@viterbo.edu s we can include you on our fun list. By the end of every semester with Global Rhythm, you would have learned a great deal about the world while having fun. It is the club’s way of bringing the world together.

Do not hesitate therefore to take a trip around the world with Global Rhythm. Have fun while you learn from friends about the sun rising in Japan , the different languages in Cameroon , and much, much more. Join us in our meetings at the back of the library, for in that little seemingly insignificant corner of the library, you would find more than just a rising sun. You will meet and join a group of people blessed by the Holy Spirit with more than just the gift of tongues. You will create for yourself everlasting beautiful experiences and share in the blessing of making our world a happier place to live in.
