Objection to columnist's usage of the word "bastard" as a way of describing a character
Hi, I enjoy your column, tho I don’t always agree with it (c’est la vie, right? LOL!); however, I do have to mention one thing that really bugged me about your last column, and that was when you downed Hope for being “the bastard” child of an adulterous affair. This is not the first time you’ve put the character down for this reason, which is, to say the least, specious. After all, both little Logan (who you say you missed seeing at Christmas---I didn’t, but that’s another story, LOL!) and Hope share the same dubious antecedents---out-of-wedlock children of adulterous affairs which left much pain and suffering in their wake. Why not refer to him with the same derogatory terminology? If he’s an innocent in the matter (as he surely is), so is Hope---after all, neither of them asked to be born under those particular circumstances. And as far as being literal bastards, all the soaps, including B&B, have their fair share of ‘em; Liam and Felicia’s little Dominick/Dante, to name but two of many. And the conditions pertaining to the births of both Bridget and Ridge were somewhat less than ideal, also, what with Bridget’s uncertain parentage, and Ridge having been passed off as a Forrester by Stephanie despite his actual Marone parentage (thereby disqualifying Steffy to be the perfect Forrester princess, as well!). I know it`s all too easy to play faves with these characters, but I really dislike the usage of such a pejorative term particularly in reference to a young, inexperienced individual. Not cool, which is a shame, cos the rest of your column is.
Very Sincerely,
Rebecca Yorke
