A fun one, two ageing creatures, friends, sat chatting beside a fire.
The Cat And The Mouse Game
15th August 07

The Cat and the Mouse sat by the fire one night,
Mouse said to Cat, “How come we don’t fight?”
Cat pondered a moment while sucking his pipe,
“Hmmmm” he said, “Something aint right.”

“So…” Said the Mouse, who was aged and thin,
“This should be rectified, how do we begin?”
“I’ll give you a head start.” Cat said with a grin,
Mouse was up on his feet, he quickly gave in.

Cat put down his pipe as he watched his friend run,
Hot on his heels, this was how it was done,
It’s a cat and mouse game if you pardon the pun,
Cat’s senses were old, yet still the cat won.

Cat had Mouse cornered with no where to hide,
He sniffed at the hole with Mouse quivering inside,
“Come little friend, forget about your pride.”
“Yes you win again.” Mouse said with a sigh.

They walked slowly back to the fire, reclaimed their seat,
They carry out this ritual each time they meet,
Cat gave Mouse his cheese treat, and Mouse gave Cat some meat,
This exchange of gifts made the evening complete.

They sat by the fire a few more moments, talking of the years,
They each knew that someday this routine would disappear,
Time was catching up on their old bones it was clear,
But until that day came, this strange friendship was here.
