Rose

The only light in the room came from a small candle in the corner of the room, surrounded by broken glass. Next to the candle was a girl. From a distance she seemed almost statue like. The wind picked up and the candle went out. She turned slightly, looking in my direction, but from where I was I still couldn't tell who she was. There was a strange sense of familiarity about her that seemed almost ghost like and as I moved closer I understood why. I walked slowly toward her, but she didn't move again. She watched every step that I made until I was sitting beside her.

"Rose?" Her face was white and her eyes had no life in them. She didn't speak.

"Where have you been? I've been searching for days trying to find you! What is wrong with you?! Running off without any warning!" I started to cry. She had never seen me cry before until now and I felt less like an older brother and more like a small child. Her statue like state remained the same and I let out a small sigh.

Her grey eyes moved down and I let my eyes follow until we were both looking at what was in her hands.

Then I woke up. Rose was still missing, but instead of getting up to look for her, I just sat up and looked at my bed side table. Laying on it was the red rose she had given me the morning she disappeared over a year ago. Until yesterday I thought she might come back and until yesterday the rose had never changed. Now it was dead and as I picked it up it turned to ashes. She was gone.
