A villanelle
You petition heaven to cease this pain
And extinguish turmoil. As you gaze
The stars sleep, passive, though the moon does wane.

Parched, crimsoned eyes wander through time in vain.
Exerting your crumpled form in this maze,
You petition heaven to cease this pain.

Sober silence forever is the bane
Which transforms your clear vision into haze.
The stars sleep, passive, though the moon does wane.

That silver voice cannot summon the rain
Any longer. As memory falls gray,
You petition heaven to cease this pain.

How shallow is the dwelling of the slain?
You stagger through desert sands in a daze.
The stars sleep, passive, though the moon does wane

Behind scattered clouds. You attempt to feign
Temporary solace within each phase.
You’ve petitioned heaven to cease this pain;
The stars sleep, passive, as the new moon fades.
