Daily Flash Fiction.
Nina hated small spaces because they gave her freaky thoughts.  But needs must, and this was a definite must.

She decided against calling her Professor as he already considered her a bit of a flake. Unfortunately she'd earned that reputation.

"Bring me evidence...not your fanciful ideas," was his favourite retort.

Her brain worked in mysterious ways. So what's a girl to do? She took a deep breath and stepped into the unknown. Again.

She was relieved when the torchlight revealed a wide corridor in the rock.  Last time she'd done something similar there'd been far too much crawling on her belly and squeezing her not-so-small frame down a seemingly endless pothole which had rapidly filled with water.

Nina trod carefully because this kind of newly exposed cave had the habit of throwing up nasty surprises, and she didn't want the path coming to an abrupt end with her unceremoniously tumbling into a deep dark chasm never to be seen again!

The last earthquake had revealed hundreds of underground caverns. The state-of-the-art equipment at the monitoring station had gone berserk with its readings.  Most uncovered nothing of interest but this one had screamed Eureka.

A blast of air whipped around her face as she ventured further inside. An eerie glow pulsed in the distance announcing its presence.

It called to her and Nina's step immediately quickened.

She rounded the corner and found herself in a brightly lit chamber.  She stared incredulously at the large rock at its centre and the gleaming sword sticking out of it.

Myth and legend were about to become a reality.

She began to smile. Ha! How's that for evidence.
