The first day of school is the hardest. Second Place 8/4/11
All of the excitement of a new school year
Beautiful children bounding into the
Classroom with all their new stuff.
Don’t have a clue where to store
Everything for the whole year.
Finding nooks and crannies, stuff it in.
Got to get to lessons.
“Hey! How are you?”
I thought the letter said no parents.
Just over protective, sigh, “They’ll be fine.”
Keep a smile on your face, while you kick them out.
Lessons begin
Math, a good place to start
Numbers flying, calling
Out over each other, alrighty, we need
Procedures for working together.

Quiet hand goes up, counting down begins.
Right away
Silence begins, “So kiddos, let’s
Talk about what just happened.”
Understanding starts to dawn
Valuable ideas create the form for our community
Welcoming their solutions to fix our problem
Xenodochially leading the discussion,
Yet following what they think would work best.
Zenith in mind, a wonderful year begins.
