A horror story from a dog's point of view, made for the daily slice.
Max laid on the rug in front of the fireplace, the charring coals the only source of light to be seen. His master slept mouth agape on the couch, controller still in hand. How typical he thought.
The silence was broken by the sound of a creek, the sound of the door slowly creaking open. The young Rottweiler look from his master, to the door, and back again. He took one last look and ran out for an adventure, He'd come home, he always did.
Ears flopping behind his head as he ran as fast as four legs would carry him, over front lawns, and under back fences he tromped, stopping here and again to dig a few perfect holes.
In the distance a howl like none he'd heard before rang, and echoed, Maxes legs ran faster and faster to catch up to the singing dog.
A school, now 50 yards ahead, the howl grew louder still. He knew it had to be coming from inside. Taking off in an excited canter, he flew through the yard of the old abandoned school.
In luck, he thought, seeing as the door was open just enough for him to squeeze through. . .
*BOOM* The door had slammed shut with force, clipping very tip of his nub of a tail. An agonizing whimper slipped from his jowls. The howl echoed down the hall beating through the dogs head.
Max turned scratching at the door behind him, useless. He began to growl, deep and low, as if he knew he must kill this thing await at the end of the hall.
Continuing into darkness, teeth baring through the complete darkness, his nub tucked tightly down as if it should be between his legs. Prowling lowly, moving forward, the howl became a screech.
Max pounced forth knowing his prey was before him, tearing and shaking his victim about, blood splattering from his teeth. *AHHRRROOOO* The dog stopped dead in his attack, confused he sniffed his pray...human. This was no howling dog, the beast still roamed the halls, his piercing scream beat frantically through his head. Instinctively the dog ran down the hall, zero visibility.
At full sprint he came tumbling to a halt.. something laid in the hall. Had the beast tripped him, had it been waiting for him. Cowering he limped over...human again. Breathing deeply he smelled many humans, corpses rotted all down the halls. What was this Monster! Max carried on limping quickly down the halls towards every door the howl seemingly all around him all the time. No doors opened, he was trapped, the dog in sheer panic now bark, and howled, and growled, and screamed.
No one heard his cries.
The slow creek he'd heard in his house, he now could hear faintly at the door where he entered. He tore down the halls ignoring his injured paw. *AHHRRROOOO* right on top of him! His legs still running as fast as they could carry him, the open door was in sight.
Something changed, he couldn't feel the hard ground beneath his paws any longer, the door no longer became closer. Max, feet still charging, whimpered as he was suspended in the air. He squirmed and scrawled making no work for his enemy.
Surges pain began to rip through the dog, he screamed the cries of a desperately injured dog, as if he was being crushed by a 2 ton car. He screamed in agony *AHHRRROOO*, now the howl was him.
The pain was relentless, ripping through his inside, terror took over his brain, how he wished the door had never opened.
Suddenly with a final agonizing burst of pain blood spray against the walls, the floors, down the corpse ridden halls. Max didn't understand the pain was gone, he was still here, still in terror. He looked down in a new light, his own body which he'd fought with many times in the mirror lay scattered like a broken glass. Fresh blood dripped and pooled.
Max didn't understand, he ran for the door but though it was open he couldn't pass through, he howled and howled. Trapped forever. He now roamed the halls terrorizing all that passed through the building, through his hell, forever searching for the beast hoping only to go home to his master and see his barely charring fireplace and half full bowl of food once more.
