an old man looks on his past and his future with no clarity, only confusion
Yesterday

Yesterday, when I was young.
Oh, it wasn’t easy.
But today,
Today doesn’t seem so sad.
The take-off was a joke.
The landings were a bit clumsy.
With grace,
I gave all I had.

Trust in faith and you’ll get through it.
You do all you can do,
Then you do some more.
Relax on the arm of your favorite song.
There is no one way,
And there is no singular truth.
Believe none.
All can be so wrong.

Yesterday, when I was true.
Yeah, I could breathe without even trying.
But today,
Today the air comes with strings attached.
I take in a breath.
I cough and I bleed
I carry my air on my back.
I stumble but the stairs are stacked.

The fear comes without warning.
The end is there and it knows.
My pulse is beyond my control anymore.
The drugs don’t have a voice.
I want to run, but the lies surround me.
I call in the judge and she turns to a priest.
Both ask for my soul.
I die, but I have no choice.
